Oct. 22 - Cottonwood 52, Cyprus 8

Story of the game - QB Crosby Jensen threw three first-quarter
touchdowns to Korbin Dooley, and Cottonwood blew out Cyprus to
clinch a first-round home game in the upcoming 5A playoffs.

Cyprus's best moment - The Pirates scored in the fourth quarter on
an 8-yard run by Albert Wolfgramm. Cyprus was complimented for
helping Cottonwood participate in a breast-cancer fundraiser, and
both team's supported by wearing pink in various parts of their
uniform.

Cottonwood's best moment - Jensen had TD passes to Chandler
Hudson and Tim Glenn as Cottonwood led 45-0 at halftime. The Colts
defense also dominated, holding Cyprus without a score until late in
the contest.

What we learned from this game - This was never a winnable game.
At least the game ended up being a profitable fundraiser for
breast-cancer research.

Next - Cyprus is done for the season. Cottonwood plays host to
Viewmont in the first round of the 5A playoffs.

Oct. 16 - Murray 24, Cyprus 17 (OT)

Story of the game - QB Dee Hamala scored the go-ahead touchdown
in overtime, and then the Spartans held Cyprus on downs to claim
their second Region 2 victory of the season.

Cyprus' best moment - The Pirates trailed 17-7 in the fourth quarter,
but then kicked a field goal and tied the game with 1:17 left when
George Wolfgramm broke loose for a 45-yard touchdown run.

Murray's best moment - Hamala ran the ball 29 times, and passed it
29 more, so he was involved in almost every offensive play. The
defense decided the game, though, when Joe Fisihetau sacked the
Cyprus QB on a third-down play in overtime, and the Pirates couldn't
recover.

What we learned from this game - This was a tough loss for the
Pirates, and likely doomed them to last place in region. We'll see if
they can get up to play Cottonwood next week. It won't be easy.

Next - Cyprus ends its season at Cottonwood. Murray plays host to
Skyline.

Oct. 9 - Granger 27, Cyprus 7

Story of the game - RB Samson Faifili rushed for two touchdowns,
and the Granger defense held Cyprus in check, except for one long
touchdown pass, and put a damper on the Pirates' homecoming with
a victory in a Region 2 game.

Cyprus' best moment - Trailing 7-0, Albert Wolfgramm caught a
70-yard touchdown pass from Jazz White, which tied the game at
halftime. That was the Pirates' only offensive highlight.

Granger's best moment - The Lancers were able to empty their
bench in the fourth quarter for the first time this season (while
winning).

What we learned from this game - This was a disappointing loss,
and it also moves Cyprus to the bottom in the Region 2 standings.
Next week is likely the Pirates' last chance of winning a region game.

Next - Cyprus plays host to Murray. Granger takes on Cottonwood.

Sept. 30 - Skyline 49, Cyprus 19

Story of the game - QB Chase Dunford threw for over 300 yards and
four touchdowns as Skyline built a 42-0 halftime lead and cruised to a
Region 2 victory over Cyprus.

Cyprus' best moment - The Pirates actually outscored Skyline 19-7 in
the second half. George Thomas scored two touchdowns and Albert
Wolfgramm had a short run for a score.

Skyline's best moment - The Eagles had no trouble moving the
football. Anthony Salehi had a season-high 114 yards. Dunford also
had a career passing night. His favorite target was Brian Orr, who
caught three TD passes.

What we learned from this game - This outcome wasn't surprising.
Skyline's offense is impressive, and Cyprus has had trouble stopping
teams. The Pirates' schedule gets a little easier now.

Next - Cyprus plays host to Granger in its homecoming game. Skyline
goes to
East.

Sept. 25 - West 49, Cyprus 10

Story of the game - RB Tana Afeaki rushed for 220 yards, and QB
Chance Abrath had his best game of the season, with almost 200
yards passing,  as West buried Cyprus in a Region 2 game.

Cyprus' best moment - The Pirates gave up 35 points in the first half.
George Thomas ran 40 yards for the team's only touchdown.

West's best moment - The Panthers dominated the line of
scrimmage, and scored the most points in any game this season.
David Solomon's 80-yard fumble return was the big play by the
defense.

What we learned from this game - The Pirates have opened region
play with two big losses. The line play has been disappointing, and
the Cyprus defense has given up a lot of points in four of six games.

Next - Cyprus travels to play Skyline. West plays host to Cottonwood.

Sept. 18 - Hunter 38, Cyprus 0

Story of the game - RB La'au Tanavasa rushed for 163 yards and
three touchdowns as Hunter's offensive and defensive lines were
dominating for the first time this season and it resulted in an easy
Region 2 win for the Wolverines.

Cyprus' best moment - The Pirates played tough in the first quarter,
and the score was still tied 0-0. Cyprus never threatened and was
shut out for the first time this season.

Hunter's best moment - The Wolverines scored 24 points in the
second quarter. After their third TD, coach Dustin Pearce's team
recovered an onsides kick, and Jason Jex booted a field goal just
before halftime.

What we learned from this game - This was a disappointing loss for
the Pirates, who looked so good last week. They gave up 323 yards
rushing.

Next: Cyprus returns home to play West. Hunter travels to Granger.

Sept. 11 - Cyprus 29, Taylorsville 10

Story of the game - Albert Wolfgramm scored two touchdowns, and
the Cyprus defense played its best game of the season, allowing the
Pirates to break open the game in the third quarter in a non-region
game.

Cyprus' best moment - Cyprus led 7-3 at halftime, but broke the
game open on an 11-yard run by George Thomas and then T.J.
Thomas caught a scoring pass from Jordan Wager.

Taylorsville's best moment - The Warriors were in no shape to rally,
but Jayce Hansen got their only touchdown on a 58-yard interception
return. That cut the margin to 22-10, but that was as close as they
could get.

What we learned from this game - The Pirates played their best
defensive game of the season. Trent Robins had a big night with two
interceptions.

Next - Cyprus starts Region 2 play at Hunter. Taylorsville opens
Region 3 action at home against
Kearns.

Sept. 4 - Juan Diego 55, Cyprus 17

Story of the game - Juan Diego QB Nathan Elorreaga threw three
touchdown passes and Lars Gunderson returned a punt 60 yards for
a score as the Soaring Eagle built a big lead and whipped Cyprus in a
non-region game.

Cyprus' best moment - The Pirates were playing from behind right
away. Jordan Wager threw TD passes to George Thomas and T.J.
Johnson. The offense, though, could not keep up with Juan Diego's
scoring.

Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle dominated from the
start. Eleorreaga threw two TD passes in the first quarter, and they
were sandwiched by Gunderson's punt return. Juan Diego benefited
from big plays, as all TDs but one were scored from 10 yards out or
longer.

What we learned from this game - The defense gave up too many
points. Even though the Cyprus offense showed a lot of spark last
week, it can't expect to do it every week.

Next - Cyprus opens Region 2 play at Hunter. Juan Diego has
another non-region game at home against Springville.

Aug. 28 - Cyprus 41, Kearns 40 (OT)

Story of the game - QB Jazz White ran 89 yards for a touchdown in the
final minute of regulation as Cyprus rallied from a 15-point deficit and
won the game in overtime when Kearns missed its extra-point
conversion.

Cyprus' best moment - This was a rare offensive show between two
defensive-minded teams. White only started practicing with the team
a few days before the game. Cyprus clearly gained the momentum on
White's run, which occurred with just six seconds left.

Kearns' best moment - After a disappointing offensive performance
in its opener, QB J.R. Finai led the charge. Sadly, the defense didn't
play to its usual potential. The 41 points given up was the most to any
team not named Bingham.

What we learned from this game - Big win for Cyprus, which showed
more offense that it has in years. The Pirates also earned their first
win for new coach Brian Jacketta. It's nice to have that job completed.

Next - Cyprus travels to play 3A power Juan Diego. Kearns takes on
Granger at home.

Aug. 21 - Provo 28, Cyprus 14

Story of the game - Maka Unufe scored three times, twice on long
passes and then with a punt return, as Provo built a big lead and
turned back Cyprus in the season opener for both teams.

Cyprus' best moment - The Pirates rallied in the fourth quarter. Down
28-0, George Thomas returned a punt 67 yards and then scored a few
players later on a 1-yard run. After a successful on-sides kick, QB
Jordan Wagner connected with T.J. Johnson on a 10-yard pass.

Provo's best moment - The Bulldogs should be looking for more
creative ways to get Unufe the ball. The fleet Provo back should be the
Player of the Week for his efforts, which helped build a 14-0 halftime
lead.

What we learned from this game - This was the Pirates' first game
under their new coach, Brian Jacketta, and the offense struggled. The
defense played well, but gave up two big plays, and the special teams
gave up a touchdown. The season doesn't get any easier.

Next - Cyprus travels to play Kearns. Provo goes to Stansbury.
