Oct. 30 - Davis 28, West 7

Story of the game - RB Tanner Hinds rushed for 187 yards and
scored three touchdowns, and the Davis defense shut down West's
running game en route to a 4A playoff victory.

West's best moment - West QB Chance Abrath hit Tana Afeaki for a
30-yard touchdown late in the second quarter, but it was negated by
penalty. Abrath had a 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to get West
on the scoreboard.

Davis's best moment - Hinds had a 9-yard TD on the Darts' second
possession. A little while later, he broke loose for an 81-yard scoring
run to give Davis a 14-0 halftime advantage. Davis put the game
away in the third period.

What we learned from this game - By falling behind early, West was
not able to establish its running game. Tana Afeaki and Anetipa
Vaisagano combined for just 137 yards. West's passing game
wasn't good enough to mount a rally.

Next - West is done for the season. Davis advanced to play host to
Pleasant Grove.

Oct. 22 - West 55, Granger 20

Story of the game - RBs Tana Afeaki and Anetipa Vaisagano had big
games as West roared past Granger in its Region 2 finale and into
the 5A football playoffs, which begin next week.

West's best moment - Afeaki finished his career at home on "Senior
Night" with 142 yards and three touchdowns as West took a 34-14
halftime lead and blew the game open with three TDs in the third
quarter. Vaisagano had 92 yards on seven carries, including a
75-yard TD run.

Granger's best moment - The Lancers scored first, but it was all
downhill after that. Samson Faifili scored twice for Granger, and QB
Nico Meza added another TD on a 1-yard run.

What we learned from this game - The Panthers secured the fourth
seed from Region 2, and advanced to the 5A playoffs. Coach Justin
Spencer said in the game story that he believes his team will win two
games in a row at some point.

Next - West will play at Davis in the first round of the 5A playoffs.
Granger is done for the year.

Oct. 16 - Olympus 7, West 6

Story of the game - The Olympus defense stopped West's victory try
on a two-point conversion late in the game, and that was the
difference in the Titans' non-region victory.

West's best moment - Tana Afeaki rushed for 138 yards, but West
couldn't score until the final seconds when Tevita Fangupo caught a
2-yard touchdown pass from QB Chance Abrath. West chose to go
for the win with 38 seconds, but Abrath's pass was incomplete.

Oly's best moment - Oly's defense played one of its best games of
the season, and there were three Titan defenders around West's WR
on the two-point try. West rushed for 248 yards on the night, but was
held to 21 yards passing.

What we learned from this game - West's strong suit is running the
football, so why pass on the extra-point try? Go with what brought
you. If you fail, then at least you failed doing what you're best.

Next - West plays host to Granger. Olympus takes on Bountiful.

Oct. 9 - West 35, Murray 14

Story of the game - Tana Afeaki and Anetipa Vaisagano combined
for 300 yards rushing and teammate Josh Fitisemanu was credited
with five sacks as West downed Murray in a Region 2 game.

West's best moment - Vaisagano had two long runs in the first half
as West took a 21-7 lead. The defense also helped by recovering a
Murray fumble on the 5-yard line, which quickly led to a score.

Murray's best moment - Murray didn't have much of a running game,
so QB Dee Hamala had to throw. He completed 18 of 45 passes for
184 yards and two scores. He was also intercepted twice.

What we learned from this game - West won the battle on the
offensive and defensive lines, and that made the difference. The win
also put West in a good position to at least make the 5A post-season.

Next - West is at Olympus. Murray travels to Cyprus.

Sept. 30 - Cottonwood 32, West 9

Story of the game - Kyle Aberton returned the opening kickoff 80
yards for a touchdown, and the Cottonwood defense didn't allow a
point until the fourth quarter en route to a Region 2 victory over the
West Panthers.

Cottonwood's best moment - Aberton gave the Colts a 7-0 lead, and
also the momentum. Cottonwood had two long scoring drives - of 17
and 18 plays - and dominated time of possession. Stephen Carter
finished with 92 yards rushing, and Konisi Hosea had 73.

West's best moment - The Panthers finally broke through in the final
quarter when Tana ran 47 yards for a touchdown. Later, Alexander
Mitkus added a 34-yard field goal.

What we learned from this game - The Colts dominated along the
offensive and defensive lines. West took away much of Cottonwood's
short passing game, but the Colts seemed to adjust.

Next - Cottonwood travels to Hunter in a game that has implications.
West travels to Murray.

Sept. 25 - West 49, Cyprus 10

Story of the game - RB Tana Afeaki rushed for 220 yards, and QB
Chance Abrath had his best game of the season, with almost 200
yards passing,  as West buried Cyprus in a Region 2 game.

West's best moment - The Panthers dominated the line of
scrimmage, and scored the most points in any game this season.
David Solomon's 80-yard fumble return was the big play by the
defense.

Cyprus' best moment - The Pirates gave up 35 points in the first half.
George Thomas ran 40 yards for the team's only touchdown.

What we learned from this game - Once again, West won by
dominating the line of scrimmage with its offensive line's physical
play. The 49 points was a season high. West probably needs four
region wins to make the post-season.

Next - West plays host to Cottonwood. Cyprus goes to Skyline.

Sept. 18 - Skyline 36, West 19

Story of the game - RB Algernon Brown rushed for 187 yards, and
threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Brian Orr on a halfback pass, as
Skyline bounced West in its homecoming game.

West's best moment - West has its running game going, and Tana
Afeaki helped a bit more with a 72-yard punt return that gave West a
12-7 advantage. West had no passing game, though, and lost this in
the second half.

Skyline's best moment - The Eagles trailed 12-7 at halftime, but
Brown gave Skyline the lead with a 7-yard touchdown run, and then
he hit Orr with a scoring pass and all the momentum changed to the
home team.

What we learned from this game - West put up a good fight, and its
physical play impressed a lot of people. If West could ever develop a
passing game, it could become dangerous.

Next - West returns home to take on Cyprus. Skyline plays at
Cottonwood.

Sept. 11 - West 21, Hunter 10

Story of the game - RB Tana Afeaki ran for 165 yards and two
touchdowns as West pulled ahead and held off Hunter in a Region 2
game that also featured a near-brawl.

West's best moment - This was homecoming at West, and the
Panthers controlled the game most of the way, thanks to its line play.
West had 241 yards rushing, but not much of a passing game.

Hunter's best moment - The Wolverines had trouble moving the
football, but QB Brett Lunceford connected with Niko Davidson on a
5-yard scoring toss late in the game. Hunter tried an onsides kick,
but it failed.

What we learned from this game - West won this game by
dominating the line of scrimmage, and let its running backs take
over. The fact the Panthers did it against Hunter is impressive.

Next - West travels to Skyline. Hunter returns home to play Cyprus.

Sept. 3 - Woods Cross 36, West 3

Story of the game - C.J. Corry ran for two touchdowns and Darchon
Taggart caught a couple of scoring passes as Woods Cross went on
the road and downed West in a non-region game.

West's best moment - The Panthers were able to run the ball and
Tana Afeaki finished with 104 yards on 17 carries, but they couldn't
put the ball into the end zone. West's only score came on a 24-yard
field goal by Uriel Gutierrez.

Woods Cross' best moment - The Wildcats came back from a tough
outing the week before and brought their A-game.

What we learned from this game - This had to be a tough result
after what happened last week. The Panthers had their running
game going, too. In three games, we've seen two different West
teams.

Next - West opens Region 2 play at home against Hunter. Woods
Cross starts Region 6 action at home against Olympus.

Aug. 28 - West 38, Tooele 13

Story of the game - Tana Afeaki and Anetipa Vaisagano combined
for over 300 yards rushing as West ran through Tooele for its first win
of the season.

West's best moment - The Panthers finished with over 400 yards on
the ground and, because of that, dominated the time of possession.
Afeaki had 177 yards rushing and Vaisagano 154.

Tooele's best moment - The Buffaloes were in the game throughout
the first half, trailing only 14-6 at intermission. But the Panthers'
running game finally wore them down.

What we learned from this game - West picked up its first win under
coach Justin Spencer and did it in a dominant fashion. It was a big
improvement over its disappointing season opener.

Next - West plays host to Woods Cross. Tooele has a home game
against Ben Lomond.

Deseret News brief,

Tribune or Tooele Transcript.

Aug. 21 - Juan Diego 42, West 0

Story of the game - RB Tana Vea scored three touchdowns and Lars
Gunderson added two more, but it was Juan Diego's defense that
had the best game in an impressive shutout win over West in the
season opener.

West's best moment - There was little to report. New coach Justin
Spencer's first game was regrettable. West's offense didn't reach
midfield until the fourth quarter. At least the Panthers held Juan
Diego's offense in check in the second half.

Juan Diego's best moment - The Soaring Eagle dominated the
game, especially the first half, rolling to a 35-0 lead. DB Keegan
Anderson led the defense with a pair of pass interceptions and
Trevor Greene returned a fumble for a touchdown.

What we learned from this game - This had to be considered a
disappointing start. Nobody expected this kind of blowout, but it
should make practice more inspired this week.

Next - West returns home to play Tooele in its home opener. Juan
Diego travels to Park City.
